Have you ever heard of Thurgood Marshall? If you’ve travelled from the airport in Baltimore, you may have noticed that it’s whole name is Baltimore Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport.
So who is this man? Thurgood Marshall was born in Baltimore, Maryland in 1902. He became a top student and graduated college to be a lawyer in a time period when African Americans were not treated fairly or equally in our country. As a lawyer, Thurgood Marshall went on to argue cases to make education fair for everyone. At the time, African American students and white students were not allowed to go to school together. In a court case called Brown vs. Board of Education, Thurgood Marshall argued in front of the Supreme Court that “Separate is never equal” and that not allowing students to go to the same schools did not allow them to have an equal education. Thurgood Marshall and his team won the case, forcing schools around our country to allow all students. Thurgood Marshall’s work changed education in our country, making our country a more free and equal place for everyone. Thurgood Marshall went on to become the first African American Supreme Court Justice. He passed away at the age of 84 in the year 1993. We should all be proud of this Marylander’s life work and dedication to making our country a better place for everyone. History for Kids Biography.com ThurgoodMarshall.com
